Working in New South Wales: A Guide for Migrants

Working in New South Wales: A Guide for Migrants has been prepared with the aim to provide migrants who are looking for work in NSW with up-to-date and concise information relating to working in New South Wales. Throughout the Guide, contact details and websites are given of organisations and services where more detailed information can be found. The Guide can be useful to migrants who want to know how to go about looking and applying for work; what courses and services can be of help to them; what is required to work in particular occupations; how to get overseas skills, qualifications and experience accepted; and what employees' rights and responsibilities are. The Guide can also be a useful source of information for people assisting or employing migrants.

The Guide provides general information about:

The Guide also gives specific information for over 300 occupations about what is needed to work in the occupation and where to get overseas qualifications and experience assessed for that occupation. For each occupation the following information is provided:

  • the necessary qualifications/skills and other requirements to carry out that occupation

  • the recognition procedures (information about the steps you need to take to be able to work in that occupation)

  • contact details of the assessing authorities, registration authorities and licensing authorities

  • contact details of any professional associations or unions

  • other information that is relevant to that occupation

To find this job-specific information you can use the Search Box (at the top right on every page) and search for an occupation. Or you can visit the Occupations section and then click on a letter at the top to find all the occupations listed under that letter. If you would like a complete list of all the types of occupations discussed in the Guide, go to the Index of Occupations and Trade Classifications

Click on the Table of contents for an overview of all the topics discussed in this Guide.
