COMMUNITY CONSULTATIONS, INFORMATION SESSIONS OR EVENTS
1. Community Builders Grants (previously Area Assistance Scheme) NEW
The COMMUNITY Builders Funding Program is a community strengthening and capacity building program. It has funds available on an annual basis for time-limited projects in particular regions of NSW. The program is funded by the NSW Department of Community Services.
Key dates
A funding round will open in the last quarter of each year.
Who can apply?
Non government not-for-profit organisations with an Australian Business Number (ABN) and local councils can apply for funds. For-profit organisations can apply too if they have a separate not-for-profit arm of their business.
The COMMUNITY Builders Funding Program is available in certain local government areas (LGAs) in the following DoCS regions:
Hunter/Central Coast
Gosford, Wyong, Cessnock, Dungog, Gloucester, Great lakes, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Upper Hunter, Singleton.
Illawarra
Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Wollongong.
Metro South West
Camden, Campbelltown, Wollondilly, Wingecarribee, Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool.
Metro West
Auburn, Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Holroyd, Parramatta, Penrith, The Hills.
North Coast
Ballina, Bellingen, Byron, Clarence Valley, Coffs Harbour, Hastings, Kempsey, Kyogle, Lismore, Nambucca, Richmond Valley, Greater Taree, Tweed.

What will be funded?
The COMMUNITY Builders Funding Program funds projects that (a) build strength and capacity within communities to deal with issues and respond to change. (b) operate in a defined area. (c) identify the community to be served by the project and, within that community select a priority group primarily one who experiences disadvantage. (d) project(s) are based on needs identified in your community which must be demonstrable through consultation and project idea supported by, and needed within that community.
What will NOT be funded?
Direct service delivery to individuals or groups, or services/projects that are part of the work and responsibility of another government department can't be funded.
How much funding is available?
Minimum of $10,000 and a maximum of $100,000 each year for between one and three years.

2. Community Development Grants Program - 18 Sep. & 2 Oct. 2009 NEW
Grants to assist the Commission to better support the work of not-for-profit incorporated community organizations to work in partnership with local government councils to address the needs of new and emerging communities.
General Grants: projects that promote cultural expression, enhance community development or minimum capital purchases. Funding of up to $18,200 is available in this category. Closing date is 2 October 2009.
Sponsorship grants - Grants for special events such as annual festivals and major cultural events. This category will open again in December 2009 and April 2010. Expressions of interest must be submitted three months before the scheduled event. The Commission will not accept sponsorship grant requests outside these funding periods. Funding of up to $5,000 is available in this category. Closing date is 2 October 2009.
Local Partnership - Grants for local government councils to enter into partnership agreement with the Commission to address the specific needs of newly-arrived or emerging communities. The Commission may also approach community organisations and local councils during the year to initiate projects. Funding of up to $60,000 is available in this category. Closing date is 18 September 2009.

3. Brain Injury Awareness Week 2009 - 14 - 20 September 2009
BIA NSW will again support a media campaign to raise community awareness, as well as promoting the events being hosted across NSW by various brain injury services. For more information,

4. Multilingual Community Speaker Volunteers - Cancer Council NSW - Closing date 18 Sep. 2009
The Cancer Council NSW is dedicated to defeating cancer by building a cancer smart community. We are seeking well presented and enthusiastic volunteers with good communication skills for the position of Multi-lingual Community Speaker Volunteer.
- Focus is to present educational sessions about prevention and early detection of cancer to adult audiences in various locations and community settings
- Speakers required for Central Coast and North Sydney; and Central and Southern Sydney
- Speakers will present in their own community or in surrounding areas.

6. Disability Service Summit - Fri, 25 September 2009

6. Disability Terms - Fact Sheets

IMPACT Services - Supporting HACC Consumers' Active Participation in Their Community was developed by the NSW Industry Forum in late 2008 as a new brand against which HACC service providers in NSW could position themselves as a part of a refocus on client-centred approaches. 4. Smoking: a matter of social justice
Rates of smoking are highest among the most disadvantaged and marginalized. How can community workers assist an individual's decision to reduce or quit smoking?
A 2-day training session by CCWT gives you the strategies to raise such an issue with your clients, gives you casework tools, resources to support clients to quit.
