Bulletin Board | Councillor's comments unhelpful

Dominic Lopez, a Mosman Councillor, in quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald on 15 October as saying that people of faiths other than Christian or Jewish are not welcome in Mosman. He is quoted as saying that he 'echoes the sentiments of people that live around here'.

His views have been condemned by the Mayor of Mosman, Councillor Denise Wilton and a spokesman for the Islamic Council of NSW.

If Councillor Lopez has been quoted correctly - we doubt that his views reflect the views of the local community - and they certainly do not reflect the views of the community at large.

These types of comments are unhelpful in an environment where great progress is being made towards the participation in society of a wide range of views and beliefs. This is the case in the Middle East in particular where major progress is being made after many years of turmoil.

The Australian experience is that it is not difficult for people of different cultures and beliefs to live in harmony. Indeed - the only problems that do arise are when extreme views are put forward as being representative of the views of the wider community.

We would all make a lot more progress by focusing on the development of a truly multicultural society in which we can all participated fully - to the overall benefit of the Australian community.
